Insight Favela – our first case study

In August 2013, CAMOC and some of its members partook in Insight Favela, an expedition into Pavão-Pavãozinho e Cantagalo Favela in Rio de Janeiro to experience how local communities develop their lives, relationships and dreams in their city.

As an informal settlement inside a very consolidated city such as Rio, this community has undergone profound changes over its many decades of existence. As a community at margin of public service delivery, citizens have had central role in both good and bad change, making this a valuable example of how we build our cities and forge community relationships.

Museu de Favela (MUF) is a community museum in charge of musealising the heritage of Pavão-Pavãozinho e Cantagalo Favela. Their approach is that every community member, their homes, histories, cultures, urban structures, landscape and vistas are part of their museum collection. Pavão-Pavãozinho e Cantagalo Favela is regarded as an open-air museum by its community members, and the experience is the territory itself.

What are your thoughts about how citizens directly and indirectly effect change in their cities?

How does MUF’s approach to urban museology impact on the way you believe museums to deal with the cities’ heritage? What are your thoughts about the type of museum experiences that could best reflect cities?
